How to Use Torrents to Stream Media to Your Apple TV Or Roku
Torrents are one of the most popular ways for millions of people to find media content such as movies, TV shows and songs. But while piracy is still illegal in some countries, torrents can also be used to distribute copyrighted material.
There’s a new app called TorrenTV that allows you to stream torrent files directly to your Apple TV or Roku device. This small app is free, open source and works on Mac, Windows and Linux computers.
To use TorrenTV, you need to install the application on a computer that is connected to the same network as your Apple TV or Roku. Once installed, simply drag a magnet link or torrent file into the TorrenTV window and it’ll start downloading and streaming to your TV.
TorrenTV is derived from Popcorn Time which caused a sensation in 2014, but it’s a lot simpler. The app doesn’t offer an index of pirated content like Popcorn Time, but it will still download the torrent files for you so that you can watch them immediately on your TV.
It’s not perfect, and there are a few quirks in how it works (it doesn’t support MKV files yet), but it’s a good way to stream your favorite media. You can play local files, too, and the developer says he’s working on Chromecast support.
TorrenTV is available for free on the Windows Store and can be downloaded through your PC’s internet browser using the store’s search box or Select Apps button. Once downloaded, it will appear in your Applications folder and you can launch the program from there.
